How does laser hair removal work?

The light created by the laser is preferentially absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft and follicle. This absorbed light turns into heat and causes a controlled rise in temperature. This rise in temperature is sufficient to damage the hair follicle and prevent re-growth, without damaging the surrounding skin.

What is involved in hair removal treatment ?

When you visit the hair removal clinic for your initial consultation, we will discuss how the hair removal treatment works and assess what is suitable for you. A test patch will then be carried out to determine the effect. Light is then pulsed over the area and you may notice a series of short light flashes as it passes over. You will see some of the hair curl up as the heat effect takes place.

Skin colour?

Black hair on white skin is the easiest to treat. However, trials show that people of Hispanic, Middle East or Pakistan / Indian origin usually have a sufficient difference in pigmentation between the hairshaft and follicle, and surrounding skin tissue for treatment to be successful. Unfortunately skin type VI is not suitable for treatment and darker asian skins may require some cooling prior to, and after treatment.

Hair colour?

In general, the darker the hair, the more effective the treatment. However, blond hair often responds well to treatment even when an early prognosis was optimistic.

How many treatments are required at the laser hair removal clinic ?

The number of treatments required varies, depending on the density and location of the hair growth. Approximately 30% of body hair is in a growing phase at anyone time. The remainder is dormant and therefore unable to absorb light. laser will remove about 75% of the growing hair at each treatment. Most people need between 5 to 8 treatments for a satisfactory result.

How long is a hair removal treatment?

The laser covers an area of skin up to 10cm2 per pulse. This allows treatment time to be reduced considerably in comparison to other IPL and laser treatments available. A large area, such as the legs, can be treated in under an hour.

How does it feel?

The majority of people experience minimal discomfort, feeling no more than a slight tingling sensation.

Is laser hair removal treatment safe?

Some parts of the body are more sensitive than others and may redden or swell slightly. This should return to normal after a few hours, but in extreme cases slight blistering may occur, this normally heals within a few days. A temporary increase or decrease in skin colour may also occur, but this is rare and disappears after a few months.
